What You Need to Know About Couple’s Massage

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

If you’ve ever considered getting a couple’s massage, then you’ll definitely want to continue reading to learn what to do, what to avoid, and how to get the right massage for you. At Zense Thai Massage Spa in Dallas, we know that sometimes one of the best ways to spend quality time with your spouse or partner is through couple’s massage. If you’re interested in scheduling a couple’s massage, then please call today to learn about our services and reserve your massage therapy appointment.

1. When should we arrive?

One of the best things that you can do to ensure that you have a great massage experience from beginning to end is to arrive early. Part of the reason for this is that you’ll have time to sit down and relax before your appointment. If you arrive right as your massage session is supposed to start, or even arrive a few minutes late, then you can feel rushed and tense, which will increase your stress levels and prevent you from getting the full benefit of your massage.

2. Do we have to get the same massage treatment?

Scheduling a couple’s massage means that you will be able to be in the same room at the same time. It does not mean that you have to get the same treatment. If you are struggling with a lot of tension in your neck and shoulders, then you might want to ask for a deep tissue massage. If your partner is more sensitive to touch, then they may opt for a Swedish massage with hot stones. The point here is that you should each ask for the treatment that will best serve your individual needs. When your appointment is done at Zense Thai Massage Spa, we want both of you to feel relaxed and at peace.

3. Can I talk during the session?

While it’s up to you what you want to do, it’s not recommended to talk during a massage appointment. Make sure to talk with your partner beforehand as to whether you will enjoy the session in relaxed silence or if you prefer to talk quietly. The massage therapists will follow your lead. Part of why we recommend enjoying your session in silence is that it allows each of you to let go of the thoughts and concerns that you may have come in with, and truly sink deeply into a relaxed state. Talking requires your brain to focus on a conversation rather than the sensation of muscles relaxing and stretching.

4. What if my partner isn’t enjoying their treatment?

One important thing to know about a couple’s massage is that it is not your job to worry about whether or not they are enjoying their time and vice versa. If they weren’t enjoying their time as much and they were forced to respond to your question in front of the massage therapist, then that could create an awkward moment for everyone in the room. Wait to ask them about their experience until after the appointment is done. Additionally, this will help you honor their relaxation time by refraining from talking.

5. What do I do if my cell phone rings?

It seems inevitable that when you don’t want to be disturbed, that is the time when your phone will ring, buzz, or vibrate. One thing you should do is make sure to silence your phone, or if lockers are provided, then leave it in a locker until after your session is done. This will also help you to leave your problems outside. By silencing your phone or leaving it outside of the massage room, you won’t have to worry about emails, texts, or phone calls from work or friends. Do your best to leave the rest of the world outside so that you and your partner can escape from it all, even if it’s just for an hour.

6. How does tipping work?

Tipping for a couple’s massage is not as difficult as you might think — think of it as tipping two individuals. Since both you and your partner will each have your own massage therapist, it makes sense to tip them separately. Find out the cost of the whole treatment ahead of time so that you can plan accordingly when it is time to tip. Etiquette suggests that you tip 20% of the total bill and split it evenly between the two therapists.

At Zense Thai Massage Spa in Dallas, we know that massage therapy can offer both healing and relaxation benefits, which is why we are proud to offer a variety of massage services. If you are looking for a unique way to spend quality time with a loved one, then be sure to call and ask about our couple’s massage therapy appointments.
